Dalit Youth Beaten to Death on Suspicion of Affair

A 26-year-old Dalit man was beaten to death in Jalore district on August 1 allegedly by eight men who suspected that he had an affair with the wife of one of the accused, police said

A 26-year-old Dalit man was beaten to death in Jalore district on August 1 allegedly by eight men who suspected that he had an affair with the wife of one of the accused, police said.

Body of Mahendra Meghwal was found in an SUV parked outside a hospital on Sayala town in Jalore district on August 2.

Police investigation found out Rekha Kanwar, wife of Narpat Singh, went missing on July 27, along with her daughter. Kanwar is from Ahmedabad, where Meghwal worked until a month ago.

“Her family said that the two had an affair and Meghwal had kidnapped her,” said Jalore’s additional superintendent of police Ram Kumar Kaswan.

On August 1, Narpat Singh and seven others took Meghwal to an isolated place outside the village, hung him from a tree and beat him up in order to get information about Kanwar’s whereabouts. “The next day, they took him to Ahmedabad in an SUV. When the accused failed to get information from him about the missing woman, they beat him to death,” the police officer said.

They returned to Sayala on early Thursday morning and abandoned the SUV with the man’s body.

The villagers informed Meghwal’s father that his son was kidnapped by eight villagers, after which Lukaram Meghwal lodged an FIR at the Sayla police station on August 2, naming the accused.

Meghwal’s uncle Mana Ram Meghwal alleged that police had not arrested the mastermind of the murder. “He has political influence and has evaded arrest. He should also be arrested,” he said.
