Dalit Beaten Up For Love Affair With OBC (Other Backward Caste) Girl

BAREILLY:  Hari Singh (21), a schedule caste, was brutally thrashed by a mob on Thursday night minutes after he arrived to meet his 18-year-old girlfriend, an OBC, at her house in Sahajana village under Meerganj police station in Bareilly. The girl’s neighbours barged into her house, dragged out the youth, tied him to a pole and assaulted him mercilessly. Hari was rushed to the district hospital, where his condition is said to be critical.

The girl also sustained injuries in the attack.

“As my family has been opposing our relationship, we decided to get married in court. On Thursday I called him to my house. However, minutes after he arrived, my neighbours and other villagers forcibly entered the house and attacked him,” Hari’s girlfriend Rinki Maurya said.

The 18-year-old said that she kept screaming for help while Hari was being attacked. “They tied him to a pole and kept beating him until he lost consciousness. They thrashed me too. Luckily, I found my phone and called Dail 100. If police hadn’t timely arrived, they would have killed us,” Rinki said. Someone from the crowd recorded a video of the incident and uploaded it online. Within hours, the clipping went viral.

On Friday, an FIR was lodge against six people under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), apart from sections of the SC/ST Act. The accused were identified as Surya Prakash, Harendra Maurya, Harendra Pal, Parmanand, Ramotar and Omkar.

Bareilly SSP Muniraj G said, “Six people have been booked in the matter. So far, we have arrested Surya Prakash and Omkar. Cops are conducting raids to nab the remaining four accused.”
